Hunza [ Sep, 27] Serena Hotels celebrated World Tourism Day 2024 with a significant panel discussion titled “Community-Centric Tourism: Promoting Indigenous Culture for Sustainable Economic Empowerment” at Hunza Serena Hotel. The event brought together experts, government officials, and industry leaders to explore how community-centric tourism can preserve cultural heritage and foster sustainable economic empowerment in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The discussion highlighted the potential of local traditions and crafts as drivers of tourism, helping to preserve indigenous culture while creating economic opportunities for local communities. Lal Bano, one of the panelists and Manager of Karighar, highlighted how community-focused initiatives empower local artisans, especially women, by providing platforms to showcase their crafts and preserving traditional skills. Her insights emphasized the vital role these programs play in fostering economic independence and cultural preservation.
Zameer Abbas, Secretary of Tourism, Sports & Culture, Gilgit-Baltistan, emphasized the government's role in supporting sustainable tourism, outlining initiatives that encourage cultural preservation while boosting tourism opportunities. He stressed the importance of public-private partnerships to ensure long-term benefits for local communities.
The event also focused on the challenges of promoting sustainable tourism in mountain regions, with Raja Ali Anwar Khan, General Secretary of the Gilgit Baltistan Association of Tour Operators, offering insights into responsible tourism practices that protect the environment and benefit local populations economically.
Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of Karakoram International University, added academic perspectives, emphasizing the role of education in promoting sustainable tourism models that balance environmental, cultural, and economic goals. His input underscored the need for a well-rounded approach to tourism development in the region.
The panel discussion concluded with several key takeaways, including the need to preserve indigenous culture as a core component of tourism and strategies to empower local communities through tourism-related opportunities. Recommendations were made for stronger collaborations between government, the private sector, and local communities to support sustainable tourism practices in Gilgit-Baltistan.

اس موقع پر مقررین نے کہا کہ خطرے سے دوچار افراد کے مسائل کو مد نظر رکھتے ہوئے پاکستان میں ڈیزاسٹر مینجمنٹ اور ریسپانس کو موثر بنانے کے لیے اس طرح کے تربیتی سیشنز کا انعقاد اچھی کاوش ہے۔ رضاکاروں اور آفات سے نمٹنے کے شعبے کے ماہرین کی صلاحیت کو بڑھا کرنہ صرف ہنگامی صورتحال میں موثر ریسپانس کو یقینی بنایا جا سکتا ہےبلکہ قیمتی جانیں بچانے اوربیماریوں کے پھیلاؤ میں کمی بھی ممکن ہو سکے گی۔

The first meeting regarding finalization of nominations of Engineering Quota Seats in various professional colleges/universities in Pakistan for the students of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) held under the chairmanship of the honorable Minister for Education Mr. Ghulam Shehzad Agha in the conference hall of Higher Education Department GB, Gilgit on 27th September, 2024. The meeting was attended by the Nomination Board members including Mr. Ghulam Shahzad Aga, Provincial Minister Education GB (Chairman), Mr. Shamsuddin Deputy Secretary Higher Education GB (Member), Mr. Muhammad Hussain, Deputy Secretary, Health GB (Member), Mr. Faqirullah, Director Diamer/Astore School Education Dept. GB (Member), Syed Nabi Shah, Director Academics, School Education Dept. GB (Member) and Prof. Muhammad Alam, Director, Higher Education Department GB (Secretary Nomination Board). Meeting started with the welcome note by the Nomination Board Secretary, Prof. Muhammad Alam, Director, Higher Education Department GB.
Ms. Abida Anwer, Deputy Director, Nominations briefed the Board about the application intake process, scrutiny and finalization of the selection of the applied candidates. She briefed about the eligibility criteria of the selection for BSc Engineering and distribution of marks for selection. The Board was also briefed about the fields of study with in the Engineering field and seats offered at various universities.
The Board members deliberated upon selection of candidates on open merit 41 seats for Gilgit-Baltistan. The Deputy Secretary Higher Education, Mr. Shamsuddin pointed out that one disabled quota seat may be given to district on rotation basis, instead of open merit. AD Nominations Mr. Tanveer Ahmed responded that the board is bound to make decision as per the approved Nomination Policy. The Minister Education/Chairman Board asked about display of Merit List on which the AD Nominations responded that the lists are displayed and applicants are informed about the merit.
The Minister Education GB pointed out that there are still many seats laying vacant in the district quota merit list. The worthy minister inquired about such vacant seats. It was decided that if the district quota seats remain vacant, these seats will be offered to student of the same district on merit basis, and if the applicants are not available or not willing to opt for the seat, the vacant seats will be offered to the applicants of the respective administrative division. If non-availability of applicants both from the respective district and the division, seats are offered to applicants of Gilgit-Baltistan/province. The Board approved the Open Merit List and directed the Secretary Nomination Board GB to go ahead with the process. After detailed discussion the Nomination Board approved the distribution of seats on District Quota as per Nomination Policy.
The Honorable Chair, Ghulam Shehzad Agha asked the consent of the Board to go ahead with the process. Upon unanimous consensus the board approved both Open Merit List and the District Quota Merit List.

وفاقی سیکریٹری نے مزید کہا کہ یہ میگا منصوبہ گلگت شہر کے لوگوں کو صاف ستھرا اور حفظان صحت کے لئے ماحول فراہم کرنے کی جانب ایک بڑا قدم ہے۔
اس موقعے پر ڈائریکٹر انجینئرنگ جی ڈی اے، پلاننگ اینڈ ڈویلپمنٹ ڈیپارٹمنٹ گلگت بلتستان کے آفیسران، کنسلٹنٹ فرم کے انجینئرز، جی بی آر ایس پی کے سوشل مبلائزنگ ٹیم اور دیگر آفیسران بھی موجود تھے۔
